Among the most evocative routes in the Aritze area there is undoubtedly the one that leads to the ancient Neviere or domos de su nie (snow houses): deep circular wells bordered by dry stone walls where the snow was deposited, subsequently collected during the summer, when by now transformed into blocks of ice it was transported and sold in the rest of the island and with which the people of Aritza prepared Carapigna, a delicious forerunner of the ice, lemon and sugar sorbet we know today. 

To reach them, you start with the Buggy from the B&B La Baita di Aritzo: at an altitude of 800 metres, surrounded by chestnut trees, it anticipates the marvel of the paths to be followed within fairy-tale settings. Dense centuries-old woods of holm oaks and oaks, rocky dwellings of numerous waterfalls and Mediterranean scrub hide sheepfolds inhabited over the centuries by shepherds who spent the long periods of transhumance here. Going up the same ancient mule tracks, used in the past by the carts pulled by mules or horses of the ice traders, you arrive on a large platform dominated by the Mont'e Tuvara fire lookout. Located at an altitude of 1380 metres, it dominates the entire Tirso valley and when the sky is clear, the horizon stretches as far as the sea that bathes the coasts of Oristano. Here, it is worth a stop with the buggies to continue on foot with an agile and short trek up to the plateau of the two sources of pure and very fresh water of Funtana Cungiada, included in the Site of Community Interest of the Gennargentu Mountains, at 1450 meters above sea level, a realm of silence, where in compliance with this characteristic it is not infrequent to come across some specimens of mouflon, the island's symbolic animal, perhaps introduced by man in the Neolithic in Sardinia but also beautiful wild horses flying high eagle, queen of the skies of Gennargentu. The arrival up to the extension of the rocky crest of the Gennargentu Massif of Punta La Marmora is an unforgettable experience. A deep breath to immortalize this extraordinary "postcard" before returning to Aritzo.
